싱귤레리티 대학(Singularity Univ)!!???

드디어 올것이 오고 있나 봅니다.

오늘 올라온 기사 중, 구글과 미국항공우주국(NASA)이 인공지능이 인간을 뛰어넘는 시기를 대비해 과학자와 미래 학자를 양성하는 대학교 설립을 지원한다는 기사가 있었습니다.

이름하여 싱귤레리티 대학(Singularity Univ.)인데요. 미 드라마인 스타트랙의 두번째 에피소드 제목이기도 한^^; 이 싱귤레리티'라는 개념은 '과학기술의 폭발적인 발달로 생물학적 인간의 한계를 초월하는 인공지능이 구현되는 시기'를 나타내는 용어입니다. 이 용어는 세계적 미래학자인 '레이 커즈와일(Ray Kurzweil)'의 미래예측서 "The Singularity Is Near : When Humans Transcend Biology" 에서 나온 용어입니다.

커즈와일은 싱귤레리티 개념을 역설하며 '노화와 질병의 과정이 역전되고 환경오염이 제거되고 전지구적 기아나 가난도 해소된다. 혈관을 흐르는 의학용 나노 로봇, 완전몰입형 가상현실에서 이루어지는 일상 생활, 뇌의 정보를 모조리 컴퓨터로 옮겨 영생을 누리기, 게다가 광속을 뛰어넘어 온 우주로 지능을 전파하는 계획까지, 인간이 기계가 되고 기계가 인간이 되는 미래 변화의 시점이 지금 눈앞에 있다'라고 말하고 있는데요. (물론, 이러한 그의 주장 or 예측에 대한 비판도 만만치 않습니다만...^^;)

오늘 올라온 기사는 그러한 예측들에 대비하여 새로운 교육 프로그램들을 도입한다는 내용이니 놀라울 수 밖에 없습니다. 그러나, 위의 설명에서도 느껴지시겠지만, 인간의 지능을 뛰어넘는 컴퓨터-기계의 출현이 영화 매트릭스에서 보여졌듯, 디스토피아적 미래관을 제시할 것이라는 예측이 있어, 어쩌면 그와같은(영화와 같은) 현상을 미리 대비하려면 이와같은 준비는 당연한 것이라 생각할 수도 있겠습니다.

구글은 구글어스'에서 보여준, 지구와 우주, 해양과 대기를 넘어 인류의 미래에까지 손을 뻗치려고 하는 듯 합니다. 어쩌면, IT업계로서 마땅히 준비해야하고, 앞서가기 위해 시도해야하는 부분일지는 모르겠습니다만, 그와같은 미래에 대한 예측을 겸허히 검토하고 투자까지 진행하는 태도는 정말이지 부럽네요. 아. 이 대학? 연구소?는 미국 우주연구 후원단체인 X-프라이즈 (http://www.xprize.org) CEO인 '피터 다이나몬디스'에게도 후원을 받는다고 합니다. 인류의 미래를 준비하는 연구단체 및 교육기관들을 향한 그들의 행보가 부러워면서도 두렵기도 한 것이, 당장의 광고 수익에 목을 매고 있는 특정 업체(특히 국내의..) 및 우리네의 상황과는 너무나 달라서일까요. 흠.

Singularity University is an announced institution for futurists to prepare for the time when computers become more intelligent than human beings.

To be modeled on the International Space University, the proposed school will not be an accredited university but will offer courses in biotechnology, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. Classes, which will begin in June 2009, will cost US$25,000 for a single 9-week course, which will run every summer. One hundred and twenty students graduate and post-graduate students will be accepted to attend.^[2]

The school is receiving backing from Google and NASA and will be located at the NASA Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley. It will be headed by Ray Kurzweil. The school is also receiving backing from Peter Diamandis and Larry Page. Diamandis will also serve as the school's vice-chancellor.
